Griezmann strengthens hold on third place

Antoine Griezmann needed barely 22 minutes to seal an important 1-2 win against RC Deportivo. The three points allow Atlético Madrid to strengthen their grip on third place, especially after Valencia CF’s defeat. The Galicians fall into the relegation zone on 28 points.

There was one man who had a starring role in the first half: Griezmann. The French footballer only needed five minutes to score the first goal of the game, a nice left-footed bicycle kick. The Deportivo central defender Sidnei almost equalised with a header following a corner. However, the score went to 0-2 following a throw in by Jesús Gámez, Sidnei tried to clear in the area, but the ball fell to Griezmann again, who scored his second goal of the game and his twentieth of the season.

During the second half, the visitors had chances to increase the lead. One of the clearest opportunities was a triple chance in the 73rd minute, in which Raúl Giménez, Fernando Torres and Raúl García took part. Five minutes later, Oriol Riera reduced the déficit with a great header. In the dying stages of the game, Víctor Sánchez del Amo’s men went in search for an equaliser but the game ended 1-2.
