Excitement right up until the end. The Liga BBVA offers a final matchday with many open clashes with targets at stake. Qualification for the next edition of the UEFA Champions League and survival will be the main prizes to play for this week. Additionally, the individual prizes for goalkeeper with fewest goals conceded and top scorer, and the fight for seventh place, are the other battles being fought at the close of the Liga BBVA.
Tensions will reach unsurpassable heights as different teams with different aim face off on the last day of the season. The Granada CF-Atlético Madrid and UD Almería-Valencia CF matches are two clashes where the Champions League and survival battles both come into play and where it will be possible to see the two faces of football out on the pitch: success and disappointment.
The Champions League is on the up
Atlético Madrid, Valencia CF and Sevilla FC will be fighting to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Atlético are currently third with 77 points and have mathematically sealed qualification for the next edition of Europe's most important competition. However, they want to seal third place, which Valencia on 74 points and better goal difference are aspiring to, in order to avoid the play-off round.
Valencia, as well as looking up and trying to reach Atlético, must be aware of what is going on below them. With Sevilla FC one point behind them, Valencia will be hoping to at least secure fourth place to deprive Sevilla with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League through the Liga BBVA. Sevilla, on the other hand, will be looking for an away win against Málaga CF in order to put pressure on Nuno Espírito Santo's men.
Survival, the most valued asset
Four sides will be fighting to stay in the top flight on the last day of the season. After Getafe CF and Levante UD managed to reach safety last week, RC Deportivo, Granada CF, UD Almería and SD Eibar will be the contenders in this dramatic battle in the last chapter of the Liga BBVA 2014/15 season.
Deportiva and Granada both have a certain advantage. Both clubs, on 34 points, are out of the relegation zone as things stand. On the other hand, Almería and Eibar, on 32 points are other two sides in the relegation zone.
Deportivo will visit the Camp Nou to play the champions FC Barcelona and SD Eibar host a CF Córdoba side who have already been relegated and have nothing to play for. The situation for Granada and Almería is more complicated. Granada host an Atlético side who are aiming to secure third place and Almeria play at home against Valencia who have a Champions League spot at stake.
In the most bizarre case where the four sides are level on 35 points, the criteria used to determine who would stay up would be to look at the points won between the teams involved. In such an unlikely case, Almería and Deportivo would be saved and Eibar and Almería would be relegated to the Liga Adelante.
The individual prizes and seventh place, the other targets to play for
The awards for the goalkeeper to concede fewest goals and the top scorer in the Liga BBVA are still to play for, although they appear to be almost decided. Claudio Bravo of FC Barcelona has the prize for best keeper in the league firmly within his grip. With 19 goals conceded in 37 games, he has a clear advantage over his closest rival, Diego Alves, with 27 goals conceded in 36 matches. The fight for the top scorer prize is also almost decided. Cristiano Ronaldo, on 45 goals, has a four goal advantage over Leo Messi, who is on 41, with one game left to play.
On the other hand, there will be a battle for seventh place in this round of games. Athletic Club, on 52 points are the main candidate who look likely to occupy it at the end of the season. The side from Bilbao will be aiming to defend it with a home win against Villarreal CF. Málaga CF, who play Sevilla, and are on 50 points could snatch the place from te, as could RCD Espanyol on 49 points, who visit RC Celta.
