HISTORY

The history of ELGRANDERBI

ELGRANDERBI refers to a football match that is unique in the history of LALIGA.

This Seville derby is contested by Real Betis and Sevilla FC, two clubs with a long-standing historic rivalry that goes far beyond the football stadiums. The city of Seville is divided by the love for their respective teams.

The rivalry between Real Betis and Sevilla FC goes far beyond the 90 minutes of the Seville derby played on the pitch. ELGRANDERBI is experienced with a unique passion by supporters of both clubs.

During the week leading up to the Real Betis vs Sevilla FC derby, on matchday itself, and in the week that follows, the city of Seville breathes a special sense of rivalry in every corner, shared among families, neighbours and friends.

HISTORY OF THE SEVILLE DERBY

The first official Seville derby in LALIGA EA SPORTS was played on 3 February 1935, with Real Betis claiming a 0–3 victory in Nervión, thanks to goals from Lecue (2) and Adolfo. Two and a half months later, on 21 April, the return fixture was played at Patronato Obrero, ending in a 2–2 draw.

Prior to this clash, Sevilla and Betis had already faced each other on several occasions. The first meeting dates back to 31 October 1909, in a friendly match for which no official record of the final score exists. One week later, on 7 November 1909, they met again in another encounter that ended in a 1–1 draw.

The first official competitive match between the two teams took place in January 1910. Sevilla FC and Real Betis faced each other in the Campeonato de Andalucía y Extremadura, with the match finishing in a goalless draw (0–0).

DERBY LEADERS

Jesús Navas, with 26 editions of ELGRANDERBI played in LALIGA EA SPORTS, is the player with the most appearances in the Seville derby. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner with Spain achieved this record thanks to his prolific career, during which he enjoyed two spells with Sevilla FC (2003–2013 and 2017–2024).
On the Betis side, Joaquín Sánchez is the most experienced player in the fixture, having played a total of 23 Seville derbies. Another Betis legend, goalkeeper José Ramón Esnaola, featured in 24 Seville derbies (1973–1985): 16 in LALIGA EA SPORTS, 6 in the Copa and 2 in LALIGA HYPERMOTION.

In overall terms, however, Joaquín himself (2000–2006 and 2015–2023) is the player who has featured in the most Real Betis vs Sevilla FC matches. In addition to his 23 league derbies, he also played 2 Copa del Rey matches and 2 more in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, bringing his total to 27.

Also noteworthy is the number of appearances made by centre-back Diego Rodríguez, who represented both clubs — Real Betis between 1982 and 1988 and Sevilla FC between 1988 and 1996 — and played in 23 editions of ELGRANDERBI, 20 of them in LALIGA.

When it comes to goalscorers, the all-time top scorer in ELGRANDERBI history is Julio Cardeñosa. The Valladolid-born striker, who played for Real Betis between 1974 and 1985, scored 7 goals (6 in LALIGA EA SPORTS) across 21 matches (17 league games). Alongside him is Sevilla player Miguel López Torrontegui (1932–1943), who also scored 7 goals in 8 matches (4 in 6 LALIGA games).
Luis Aragonés scored 6 goals during his time at Real Betis (1961–1964), while Sevilla players José Antonio Reyes (1999–2004 and 2011–2016), Raimundo Blanco (1938–1945) and Ivan Rakitic (2010–2014 and 2020–2024) each scored 5 goals.

SEVILLE DERBY STATISTICS

The statistics of the Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC show that a total of 110 matches have been played, with Sevilla FC winning 50 times, Real Betis claiming 32 victories, and 28 matches ending in a draw. Additionally, 14 encounters have taken place in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, resulting in 6 wins for Sevilla FC, 4 for Real Betis, and 4 draws.

Looking at the overall figures, including all competitions, 145 direct clashes between Real Betis and Sevilla FC have been held, with 66 victories for the Nervión side, 42 for the Betis team, and 37 draws.

Footballers who have played for Real Betis and Sevilla FC

To date, 11 footballers have played for both protagonists of ELGRANDERBI. A rivalry that has largely prevented player movement between the two clubs, with half of these cases occurring in the early years of LALIGA EA SPORTS.

Isco

Francisco Alarcón ‘Isco’, a Spanish international who came through the youth ranks of Valencia CF—where he made his professional debut—went on to enjoy a long career at Málaga CF and Real Madrid before settling in the Andalusian capital. As a Real Madrid player, he won three LALIGA EA SPORTS titles.

After ending his spell at Real Madrid, the Benalmádena-born midfielder signed for Sevilla FC in the summer of 2022, where he played 12 matches before terminating his contract in January 2023. A few months later, in the summer of 2023 and under Manuel Pellegrini, he joined Real Betis.

He did not feature in ELGRANDERBI while at Sevilla FC, something he has done as a Betis player.

José Mari

Before Isco, the last player to wear the shirts of both ELGRANDERBI protagonists was José Mari Romero.

The Seville-born midfielder reached professional football with Sevilla FC, making his LALIGA EA SPORTS debut in February 1996. In a difficult season for the club, which ended in relegation, he played 21 league matches before joining Atlético de Madrid.

José Mari later represented Atlético Madrid (in two spells), AC Milan and Villarreal CF before returning to his hometown in 2007 to play for Real Betis. As a Betis player, he made 25 appearances over two seasons, with his stint ending in January 2009, a few months before Betis were relegated to LALIGA HYPERMOTION.

José Mari played a total of four editions of ELGRANDERBI—one with Sevilla FC and three with Real Betis—without scoring in any of them.

Diego Rodríguez

The most emblematic case of a player representing both Sevilla FC and Real Betis is Diego Rodríguez. The Canary Islander spent 14 seasons in the Andalusian capital, split between the two clubs.

After debuting with CD Tenerife, he signed for Real Betis in 1982, playing six seasons as a Betis player in which he made 256 appearances, 198 of them in LALIGA EA SPORTS. In his final years he served as captain. In 1988, however, he switched sides and joined Sevilla FC, where he remained for eight seasons, playing 293 matches, 252 of them in LALIGA.

Diego later played for Albacete and Dos Hermanas and featured in 23 editions of ELGRANDERBI, 20 of them in LALIGA EA SPORTS. On 7 May 1989, one of his goals decided the derby played at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Other players

Throughout LALIGA history, there have been relatively few footballers who have played for both ELGRANDERBI clubs. Most cases occurred in the competition’s early years, while in the late 20th and early 21st centuries there were a handful of short-lived spells at one or both clubs.

- Joaquín Jiménez Postigo. A unique case, as he won titles with both teams. He was part of Real Betis’ LALIGA EA SPORTS-winning squad in the 1934/35 season, although he did not play a single league minute. The following season he joined Sevilla FC, where he stayed until 1951, winning the 1946 league title and two Copa del Rey trophies (1939 and 1948).

- Mariano Pérez Retamar. The first player to feature for both clubs in LALIGA EA SPORTS. The striker spent the 1939/40 season at Real Betis, playing nine matches, before joining Real Murcia and later Sevilla FC in the 1941/42 campaign, where he played eight league matches.

- Francisco Suárez. A career very similar to Retamar’s. The goalkeeper spent five years at Real Betis (1935–1940), playing in three LALIGA EA SPORTS seasons disrupted by the Civil War. After joining Real Murcia, he signed for Sevilla FC in 1942, playing four matches over four seasons.

- Francisco Carmona ‘Paquillo’. Another goalkeeper to defend the goals of both Heliópolis and Nervión. Between 1940 and 1944 he played 58 matches for Real Betis, achieving promotion to LALIGA EA SPORTS. Late in the 1943/44 season he joined Sevilla FC, where he played six matches over two and a half seasons and won a league title.

- Francisco Antúnez. The Seville-born defender played for Real Betis between 1941 and 1946, making 84 appearances and achieving promotion before signing for Sevilla FC. He remained there until 1953, winning one LALIGA EA SPORTS title and one Copa del Rey, and making 139 appearances.

- Enrique Mateos. The Madrid-born striker joined Sevilla FC in 1961 after eight seasons at Real Madrid, spending three seasons with the club. He later alternated spells at Recreativo de Huelva and Real Betis between 1964 and 1966. He scored in ELGRANDERBI on 28 January 1962 as a Sevilla player.

- José Carvajal. The Seville-born forward came through Real Betis’ youth system and played four first-team matches before switching to Sevilla FC in 1989. He made 126 appearances for Sevilla until 1994. He played twice in ELGRANDERBI during the 1990/91 season, scoring at the Sánchez-Pizjuán (3–2).

- Juan Luis Redondo. The right-back from Camas played three matches for Real Betis in 1997 after progressing through the youth ranks. He later played for Hércules CF, CD Logroñés and Elche CF before signing for Sevilla FC in 2002. He made 70 appearances for Sevilla before returning to Hércules CF and played five editions of ELGRANDERBI, all with Sevilla FC.
