LALIGA and Medellín City Hall on Wednesday unveiled an agreement under which LALIGA will support the transformation of the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. Through the agreement, LALIGA makes its knowledge and experience in developing and modernizing sports infrastructure available to the city.
The agreement provides for specialist advice across a range of technological and operational areas, with the aim of creating a more modern, safe and connected stadium tailored to the needs of the city and its fans. This includes developments in connectivity, security, TV production, lighting, sound and screens.
The unveiling and a joint press conference were attended by Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez and Marc Tarradas, LALIGA's Managing Director for South America. They rounded off a week in which LALIGA and Medellín's leading institutions made progress on the various strands of the stadium modernization project.
Federico Gutiérrez, Mayor of Medellín, said: "This is the stadium the city deserves, and it will remain 100% public. It is a model that will serve Medellín today, but we are making it available to any city in Colombia, because it is a way of moving forward on infrastructure. We are going to use the same mechanisms as the private sector so that it is efficient and well managed."
Marc Tarradas, LALIGA's Managing Director for South America, said: "LALIGA has extensive knowledge and experience in the development and modernization of sports infrastructure. Our goal is to contribute this knowledge with a comprehensive vision that combines technology, security, operations and the fan experience, adapting the solutions and lessons learned at other major stadiums to the specific needs of the city."
Several bodies are taking part in the project, working together across the different areas needed for the stadium's full transformation and modernization:
- the Urban Security and Solutions Company (ESU)
- the Urban Development Company (EDU)
- the Agency for Landscape, Heritage and Public-Private Partnership Management (APP)
- the Medellín Institute of Sports and Recreation (INDER)
- Medellín City Hall
The project presentation caps a week of work in Medellín. During that week, the LALIGA team met with various bodies involved in the project and in the development of the city's infrastructure, including ESU, EDU, INDER, APP and the Colombian Chamber of Infrastructure (CCI).
At these meetings, participants reviewed the status of the Atanasio Girardot's technology upgrade and discussed the main needs and opportunities for moving the venue's transformation forward.
This work draws on the experience of LALIGA's Infrastructure team, which has been involved in some of the biggest stadium renovation and construction projects in Spain. The team brings technical expertise and extensive experience in modernizing large sports venues to the Atanasio Girardot project.
LALIGA's commitment to Colombia
The Atanasio Girardot project is part of LALIGA's commitment to developing football in Colombia and to promoting infrastructure that supports the growth and professionalization of the sport in the country.
The collaboration between LALIGA and Medellín marks a further step in this commitment. It reflects LALIGA's determination to keep making its sports infrastructure expertise available to local institutions and to support the city through each stage of the project.
