Fact of the week

Surprise-package Las Palmas excel in LALIGA rankings

Garcia Pimienta’s charges are earning a reputation as a fine possession-based side. They create play by getting on the ball and claim the final podium place in terms of the number of passes per possession, racking up an average of six passes per possession in the attacking phase. Meanwhile, the islanders also rank third when it comes to passes played per minute.

However, it’s not only in possession that Las Palmas occupy the leading spots in the standings. It’s worth pointing out that they’re the fifth top-performing side for recoveries per minute, reflecting their aggressive approach to regaining possession. As if that wasn’t enough, they’re also a tough side to break down and sit pretty in second spot for the number of attempts on goal it takes to score against them (13). In short, the Amarillos are shining brightly at both ends of the pitch.

Remarkable Coach

Michel tops games-won charts

A few weeks ago, we spoke of Michel as somewhat of a surprise package, but he has now firmly cemented his status as a top coach. His Girona side lead the league standings thanks to their ten wins, but it’s also worth looking at how those victories have been secured. Their efficiency in front of goal speaks for itself, with the Catalans ranking as the league’s bridesmaids for the number of shots required to score (5.5 attempts per goal). These chances typically come about following good possession play in the final third, with Michel’s men lying third for the number of passes completed in attacking areas (99 per game). The fine impression his team leave on any onlooker and the statistics coincide to propel our standout coach to the LALIGA summit.

Key Player

Willian Jose enjoys purple patch

Football is ultimately all about goals and in this regard, our key player features as one of the top ten players in the Spanish top flight, having found the net five times this campaign. However, that isn’t the extent of Willian Jose’s talents, with the Real Betis sharpshooter also posting the seventh-best shot conversion rate in the competition (42%). It’s interesting to see where these actions occur on the pitch, and the following graphic displays the position of the forward’s attempts on goal and his goals.

The Match up

Beyond Stats have Seville derby covered

Real Betis occupy a far healthier place in the league standings than their city foes, who continue to search for the winning formula in their bid to haul themselves up the table. The Nervion-based outfit sit in fourth place in the division standings for the number of dangerous possessions, i.e., the proportion of their attacks that pose a threat on the opposition’s goal. Sevilla record more attempts on goal, crosses and through-balls than the Verdiblancos, who have the upper hand in the defensive metrics, such as their success in countering opposition attack and saves. These differences are reflected in the graphic below.

Remember his name

Isco stars in standings

The Real Betis schemer continues to deliver the goods this term as he features prominently in the rankings. The Andalusian ace bags third place in the league for the number of high-impact actions, which serve to create goalscoring chances for the Sevillians. He also lies in third spot for the number of passes completed in the final third, chalking up almost 20 such passes per game. Meanwhile, his return of 17 dribbles means that only one other LALIGA player outperforms him in that department. If we take a closer look at these dribbles, we find that many of them break the opposition’s midfield line, a ranking where he sits fifth in the LALIGA EA SPORTS charts.

Metric of the week

Crosses leading to an attempt on goal

In the modern game, we’re not only able to measure the number of crosses a team plays, but we can also analyse the outcome of the crosses. For example, we’re able to explore those crosses that lead to an attempt on goal. One of the leading sides in this department are Sevilla FC, who lead the way in terms of the number of crosses leading to an attempt on goal.
