Fact of the week

Gonzalez’s Cadiz & the tale of tweaks in the nick of time

Cadiz secured their top-flight survival in dramatic fashion on the last matchday of the season. Sergio Gonzalez certainly had his work cut out when he took up the reins at the club, but he soon brought about some noticeable changes. The Andalusians improved in both boxes, created more chances and became more clinical, whilst also tightening up defensively. The direct football they played in the first half of the campaign was replaced by a system that involved more link-up play and high-tempo passing.

This clip illustrates just what a high-intensity outfit Cadiz have become, not only in terms of the number of high-intensity actions, but the distance they gain in such actions. Indeed, for each sprint completed at over 21km/hr, the team progressed almost 31m.

Remarkable Coach

Alguacil's Real Sociedad have achieved their target

Imanol Alguacil’s Real Sociedad have gained their qualification for European competitions for a third consecutive year. And the Basques have done so by remaining faithful to their purposeful brand of football. As well as featuring amongst the division’s top five sides for team spacing with the ball, nobody has racked up more double-pressure passes (those in which both the passer and the receiver are under pressure) in the league than the San Sebastian-based side, which clearly demonstrates their commitment and ability to play in tight spaces.

When the La Real players lose possession, they all react and display a high level of defensive commitment. Indeed, the boys from the Reale Arena lie amongst the top three teams for the distance covered after losing possession in high-intensity actions (above 21km/hr over at least 20m).

Remarkable Coach

Lopetegui delivers season of fine football in well-balanced system

We often highlight Sevilla’s on-pitch positioning as one of the keys to their blueprint. Indeed, the boys from the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan boast the widest team spacing in the division in possession, i.e. they have the highest convex hull in the attacking phase. In addition, each of their possessions involve an average of 3.3 players, which earns them the final spot on the LaLiga Santander podium in this department. Meanwhile, the team’s possessions see the Nervion-based outfit rank amongst the top three in the league for the number of passes per minute.

We mustn’t forget that not only do Julen Lopetegui’s lot excel in the attacking phase, they also perform admirably defensively, where they are the league runners-up for dangerous recoveries (13%).

Key Player

You can't beat Bono!

Bono has made the goalkeeper spot his own at the Andalusian capital club and has shone as one of the league’s top glovesmen. The Morocco international has been the undisputed first choice between the sticks for the side that boasts the meanest backline in the top flight and has been a commanding and assured presence when called into action to deal with one-on-ones, aerial balls and mid- and long-range shots, etc.

His influence is clearly reflected by the statistics. For example, he leads the way for the percentage of saves across the division’s goalies (76.2%) and claims a place on the podium for the percentage of caught saves (78.3%). Meanwhile, the reliable custodian lands fifth spot for the number of clean sheets (13) in the league, having pulled off 13 big saves.

Key Player

The leader of leaders, the player of the season: KARIM BENZEMA

The key to success isn’t just about delivering, it’s about delivering when it matters most and single-handedly hauling your team out of a tight spot. As illustrated in this video, Karim Benzema is one of the LaLiga Santander’s top performers when it comes to carries leading to shots, a metric in which Real Madrid are the division’s top dogs.

If we turn our attention to the one thing that wins football matches, i.e. goals, the French hitman is the undisputed champion. He’s the league’s leading marksman with 27 goals to his name; registers the most attempts per match, with 4.4; and posts the most shots on target, with 2.1; and also tops the charts for the number of passes in the final third (24.8).

In addition to these outstanding statistics in the attacking phase, we also note that the French front runner features near the top of his team’s ranking for the pressure he is under when playing a pass.

The Match up

A decisive game for RCD Mallorca

The Match up

Top-flight survival on the line in Osasuna v Mallorca battle

There was plenty of tension in the air in the build-up to this match and it was little surprise, given that Mallorca’s top-tier status was in the balance. If we look at the statistics relating to both sides, we’re immediately hit by some interesting findings. If we start by looking at the data in the clip, Mallorca rank third in the league for the number of double-pressure passes i.e. those in which both the passer and receiver are under pressure, per game.

It’s also worth noting that this encounter pitted two of the league’s top three teams when it comes to the lowest distance to the nearest opponent when players receive a pass. In other words, not only do the players come under pressure when playing the pass, as we mentioned above in relation to Mallorca, they also face pressure when receiving a pass.

Remember his name

Abdon is RCD Mallorca through and through

Whilst the frontman netted the goal that earned the Bermellones promotion to the top flight a few seasons ago, his late winner against Rayo Vallecano last time out means that Mallorca’s survival destiny lies in their own hands as we head into the final matchday. Despite not being one of the first names on the teamsheet, Abdon can be relied on to make an impact. He features amongst the top three players in the Mallorca ranks for the number of goals scored and shots on target and is therefore a key player in the final third. In addition, he is also the squad member who registers the lowest distance to the nearest defender before receiving the ball. This reflects the challenge he faces when he gains possession as he typically receives the ball following a direct attacking move and finds himself surrounded by opposition defenders.

Muriqi arrival saves the day

Some players have the ability to check in at a club and make an instant impression, contributing goals, assists and securing points and Vedat Muriqi certainly fits into that category. As we can see in this clip, the frontman is never given an easy ride by opposing defenders and ranks amongst the top 15 players in the division for the shortest distance to the closest opposing player when he receives the ball.

He also features amongst the top ten players in the attempts charts, which helps to explain his impressive five-goal haul. However, we want to draw your attention to one criteria that speaks volumes of his effort and determination and that is his performance in duels.

After joining Mallorca in the winter transfer window, the sharpshooter tops the LaLiga Santander standings for the number of aerial duels contested, chalking up almost 13 per outing, and he’s the league’s bridesmaid for the number of aerial duels won (almost seven).

Metric of the week

Carries leading to shots

Not all carries come under the same umbrella. Their characteristics can vary greatly and they can be categorised in terms of the area of the pitch where they take place, the distance travelled, the number of opponents beaten, etc. One of the most interesting elements that we can explore is what happens after the carry and this has led to the creation of this particular metric, which encompasses all of the carries that lead to a shot as we bid to identify the players and/or teams that excel when it comes to recording such actions.
