Celta reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League for the first time in 16 years with their 2-0 victory in Russia. Eduardo Berizzo’s men knocked out Krasnodar with second-half goals from home grown players Hugo Mallo and Iago Aspas, which built on their first leg 2-1 triumph in Vigo.
Krasnodar dominated the early exchanges as they looked to get back into the tie but Celta steadily took control of the game. The break-through did not come until the second half when captain Hugo Mallo pounced on a loose ball to lash a shot high into the top corner. It was his third goal of the season in all competitions. With 15 minutos remaining, John Guidetti set Iago Aspas scampering through on goal and the striker sealed the tie with a trademark lob over the advancing keeper. It was his fifth goal in eight outings and his 20th in all competitions this season.
Celta reached the last eight in Europe for the first time since 2001 and the fourth time in their history. They go into the quarter-final draw in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday, which takes place at 13:00 CET.
