Fact of the week

Espanyol possession gets facelift under Luis Garcia

Prior to the appointment of the new man in the RCD Espanyol dugout, the Catalans sat in 10th place in
the league standings for attempts per possession. Under Luis Garcia’s tutelage, they have shot up into
second place in this department. This upturn in fortunes owes to a change in approach in the build-up
phase, with a greater focus on passing. Despite this less direct blueprint, which means that each of the
team’s passes beat fewer opposition players, Espanyol continue to lead the way in this particular
criteria. The Pericos lie top of the tree for the number of opponents beaten per pass, averaging over
three. In the defensive stakes, Garcia’s men excel in aerial duels and breaking down opposition attacks,
clinching third spot in both areas. Espanyol find themselves in a rather sticky spot right now and are
currently languishing in the dreaded drop zone. To make matters worse, this matchday serves up a
meeting against an FC Barcelona side who can clinch the LaLiga title in their old foes’ backyard.
However, the hosts can take heart from the above-mentioned statistics, which reflect the team’s
recent improvement. The graphic below shows where Espanyol’s goals have come from since Garcia
took up their reins.

Remarkable Coach

Xavi on the brink of LaLiga glory

In this section, we shine the spotlight on Xavi, who in a few days’ time can lead his side to the LaLiga
Santander title. A whole host of statistics have steered FC Barcelona to the summit, and we want to
draw your attention to several that combine two hallmarks of the Catalan giants’ game: attacking play
and successful combination play in the final third. Barça are the league’s bridesmaids for attempts on
goal, racking up almost 15 per game. They also occupy second spot for the number of passes in the
final third, with nearly 140 per outing, passes per possession and the average number of forward
passes, with over 380 per match. These statistics reflect how Xavi has managed to combine various
elements to implement a playing style that has allowed the team to put points on the board week in,
week out. That said, we mustn’t overlook the team’s fine work in defence and the merits of the side’s

Key Player

Jordi Alba offers high-quality minutes

The experienced defender continues to register some highly impressive statistics every time he crosses
that white line. Only one other player in the competition is involved in more attacking actions than
Jordi Alba. Despite his status as a defender, he continues to show that he is one of the most
attack-minded players in the competition, and he is an influential figure in the team’s build-up phase.
The graphic displays all of Alba’s key passes this term (over 25). In addition, as we can see from the
video clip, when he gets into goalscoring positions, he is adept at taking his chances.

The Match up

All to play for in Barcelona derby

A league title and the threat of relegation will be on the line in the Matchday 34 Catalan derby
between Barcelona and Espanyol. As we can see in the video, despite their woes, the boys from the
RCDE Stadium rank fifth in the shot conversion stakes, with 11% of their attempts on goal ending up in
the back of the net. Luis Garcia’s troops must take comfort from such statistics as they bid to haul
themselves away from danger.

Meanwhile, Barcelona lie in the top half of the league standings in a raft of criteria. As portrayed in the
graphic, the Camp Nou-based outfit lie above the majority of teams in attempts, attempts on goal, key
passes and passes in the final third. The team’s effectiveness is also notable, particularly in the buildup phase and finishing. In short, not only do the Azulgranas finish their moves, but they also record
above-average statistics in the build-up.

Remember his name

Joselu stars despite team’s struggles

Joselu can always be relied on to bring a spark and an attacking threat when he takes to the pitch and
his statistics reflect his ability. He features amongst the top ten players in the Spanish top flight for
both goals scored and attempts on target. His goal-per-game rate is just short of 0.50. The video shows
how he executes these high-impact actions and helps his team to pose a goal threat. The graphic
illustrates how the striker’s goals have originated. The majority come from the left flank and in terms
of where the ball hits the net, his strikes are well distributed across the goal.

Metric of the week

Carries that beat the opposition’s midfield line

This metric relates to carries that overcome the opposition’s midfield line. These initial carries
determine the outcome of a move and influence the subsequent numerical advantages and spaces
that are generated. At team level, Villarreal CF are the division’s top dogs for such carries.
