The history of El Derbi Vasco
The Basque Derby refers to one of the most charismatic derbies in the history of LaLiga.
This duel features Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Sociedad, the two most successful clubs in the Basque Country.
HISTORY OF DERBI VASCO
The rivalry between Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Sociedad goes beyond the 90 minutes played on the pitch. The Basque derby itself exudes passion, love for the colors, and a sense of belonging to San Sebastián and Bilbao.
During the week leading up to the derby between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad, and on the day of the match, every corner of Bilbao and San Sebastián breathes one of the healthiest rivalries in Spanish soccer, where family, neighbors, and friends enjoy the Basque derby party.
The first league match between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club was played on the opening day of the 1928-29 season, on February 10, 1929, with the points shared (1-1) and goals from Paco Bienzobas and Bergareche (respectively) on the stroke of half-time in Atocha. The return leg, at San Mamés, was played on April 28, with Bilbao coming back from 0-2 down in the early minutes to win 4-2.
THE DERBYâS LEADING LIGHTS
San Sebastian goalkeeper Luis Miguel Arconada is the player who has played in the ELDERBI VASCO the most times. Thanks to his long career (1973-1989), he faced Athletic Club 33 times defending Real Sociedad's goal. Of those, 24 were in LALIGA. He is followed by his teammate in the 1980s, Irun-born center back Alberto Górriz (1979-1993), with 32 appearances. Twenty-three of those were in LALIGA.
On the Biscayan side, Iker Muniain (2009-2024) is the player who has played the most matches in ELDERBI VASCO, a total of 26, of which 25 were in LALIGA, one more than Arconada. This makes the Navarrese player the footballer with the most league appearances in ELDERBI VASCO. Behind Muniain in the red-and-white ranks is the legendary José Ángel Iribar (1962-1980), who played in 25 Basque derbies, but ‘only’ 21 of them in LALIGA EA SPORTS.
In terms of goalscorers, the historic Telmo Zarra, Guillermo Gorostiza (Athletic Club) and José María Satrústegui (Real Sociedad) stand out with 14 goals in direct confrontations.
Among active players, both Iñaki Williams (Athletic Club) and Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad) have scored seven goals.

Athletic Club and Real Sociedad have faced each other 158 times in LALIGA, with the balance slightly in favor of the Lions: while the Basque side has won 63 head-to-head matches, the ‘txuri-urdin’ have won 54 times. The other 41 Basque derbies ended in a draw. In terms of goals scored, the Rojiblancos dominate with 254 goals for and 212 against.
