In a season that served as a warm-up for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, Javier Fernandez was crowned European champion for the fifth straight year and finished a creditable fourth in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki. All in all, it was a campaign full of hard work and emotions, including many highs and the odd low. The Madrilenian will now be looking to harness those experiences as he sets his sights on the biggest challenge of his career: his bid to claim an Olympic medal in South Korea.

As if all that wasn't enough, just a few days after he formally wrapped up his season, Fernandez found out that Madrid's regional government – the Community of Madrid – is to award one of the region's favourite sons its Gold Medal in recognition of his career achievements. The prize will be presented at an official ceremony during the Dos de Mayo festival on 2 May.

This is another richly deserved accolade for a groundbreaking sportsman whose trophy cabinets already include two world titles (2015 and 2016) and five European crowns (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017).

The future is undoubtedly bright for Fernandez, while this piece of news is a testament to the admiration inspired by a man who is already among Spanish sport's chief standard-bearers.
