Fact of the week

League leaders pull away while remaining faithful to build-up blueprint

FC Barcelona now boast a five-point cushion over Real Madrid and are eight points better off than Real Sociedad in third. Despite the current standings, it is well worth noting the nature of the two title hopefuls’ fixture schedule in the coming weeks. While Barça host two of the division’s top 10 teams in their next three games, Los Blancos do not face any of the sides currently lying in the top nine over the next three matchdays.

However, if we focus our attention on the on-field matters, we can see that Xavi’s troops have plenty of reasons to be satisfied. The Catalan giants lead the way in the LaLiga Santander charts in terms of their attacking build-up courtesy of the fact that their possessions feature more passes than any other team, as they regularly string together sustained passing moves. This facet of Barcelona’s game is clearly evident from this video and the graphic, which features Barcelona’s longest passing sequence in their last outing.

Remarkable Coach

Rubi’s man-management skills come to the fore

Almeria are currently sitting comfortable in mid-table after having delivered some convincing displays in which they have put broad smiles on their fans’ faces. One of the main drivers behind the team’s success is, without question, their coach, Joan Francesc Ferrer, better known as Rubi. The Andalusians claim the final spot on the LaLiga podium for the number of forward passes after regaining possession. This metric is key when it comes to understanding their playing style and reflects what a bold system Rubi has instilled amongst his squad. Being able to progress forward so quickly after winning the ball back allows the team to create numerical advantages and promising situations in the attacking phase.

What’s more, the Andalusian outfit post an above-average ranking for shot conversion or, in other words, they make the most of their goalscoring opportunities. There is also a great intensity to Almeria’s play, as reflected by the fact that they sit in fifth place for the number of actions completed at over 24km/hr and 28km/hr. Intensity is clearly a non-negotiable amongst Rubi’s ranks.

Key Player

Aspas continues to rewrite history books for boyhood club

Galician-born hotshot Iago Aspas is the sixth player in LaLiga history whose goalscoring exploits have earned his team over a century of points, a statistic that helps us to appreciate the instrumental role played by the seasoned striker both in the present and the past.

The Celta marksman lies third in the league goal charts, with nine strikes to his name. You can relive his latest goal in the video clip, while the following graphic shows the areas of the pitch from where the Moaña-born goal-getter has found the net this term.

The Match up

Barça v. Sevilla: mouth-watering match-up between teams in contrasting form

Barcelona welcome a Sevilla side to the Camp Nou that, despite having recorded a number of
encouraging results together in recent weeks, remain in a dire situation. Jorge Sampaoli’s men have
racked up three wins in their last four games and lie third in the LaLiga standings for the number of
passes per possession, with Xavi’s recruits topping this particular ranking.

As we can see in the following diagram, the Matchday 20 opponents are very evenly matched when it
comes to their ball circulation rate, which measures the number of passes played per minute of
possession. The areas in which differences can be identified are crosses and passing distances, where
the Nervion-based outfit hold the upper hand. However, the Catalan giants prevail in the statistics
relating to build-up play and passes in the attacking third.

Remember his name

Experienced Melero keeps Almeria ticking

As we can see in the following footage, Gonzalo Melero is Almeria’s most effective passer. The
midfield maestro possesses immense passing accuracy and is one of the main reasons why the team
are able to attack so quickly after recovering possession. His unerring passing accuracy is
complemented by the threat and significance of his passes. The influential role played by Melero in the
team’s build-up phase places him in the top three of Almeria’s standings for key passes, as we can see
in the following graphic, while he also features amongst the top three for assists. However, there is
much more to the creative schemer’s game, as he also records attempts on goal. Indeed, the Madridborn
midfielder lies fourth in the team standings for the number of attempts on target.

Metric of the week

Distance covered at over 21km/hr

This metric measures the distance an individual player covers at over 21km/hr. The statistic is expressed in average terms per game, but we are also able to analyse the greatest distance at this speed notched up by a player, which is exactly what we have done with Saúl in the following clip, with the Atletico Madrid man recording a total distance of 572.5m at this speed.
