In 1986 he was signed by Real Valladolid CF, making his first division debut in the 1987/88 season. In 1989 he joined Real Madrid, where he won five LaLiga titles, a Copa del Rey, five Supercopas and three UEFA Champions Leagues. He was the eternal captain of the team in white, where he played more than 500 matches, and he is considered one of the best central defenders of all time. After 14 seasons with Real Madrid, he left to Al-Rayyan Catarí in 2003. In the 2004/05 season he returned to European football with the English club Bolton Wanderers for one final season.
