With over a century of LaLiga goals to his name, Diego Forlan left an indelible mark on the Spanish game. The Uruguayan sharpshooter arrived in Spain in the 2004/05 campaign following a spell in the Premier League, joining Villarreal CF at a time when the club was assembling the team whose European exploits would catch the imagination of a whole continent. Forlan quickly settled in his new surroundings, with his 25-goal debut season enough to see him claim a maiden European Golden Shoe.
During the course of his three seasons with the Castellon outfit, he established himself as the club's talismanic goalscorer. Indeed, his form in front of goal propelled him up to second spot in the Yellow Submarine's all-time goalscoring charts. Forlan's stellar performances saw Atletico Madrid court his services, and in the summer of 2007, he made the move to the Spanish capital.
In his first season at the Vicente Calderon, his 16 goals were instrumental in helping Los Rojiblancos return to the European stage as they secured a spot in the Champions League qualifying rounds. In the following campaign, his 32 LaLiga goals saw him claim a second European Golden Shoe award. The 2009/10 campaign proved a successful one for Atleti and Forlan, with the prolific forward playing a leading role as Los Colchoneros captured the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.
Following brief spells in Italy and Brazil, Forlan packed his bags for Japan in the 2014/15 season, where he turned out for Cerezo Osaka, hitting 17 goals during his time in the J. League. This was followed by a sojourn in India with Mumbai City, for whom he scored five times before hanging up his boots.
