The Basque Derby refers to one of the most charismatic derbies in the history of LALIGA.
This duel features Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Sociedad, the two most successful clubs in the Basque Country.
HISTORY OF ELDERBI VASCO
The rivalry between Athletic Club de Bilbao and Real Sociedad goes beyond the 90 minutes played on the pitch. The Basque derby itself exudes passion, love for the colors, and a sense of belonging to San Sebastián and Bilbao.
During the week leading up to the derby between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad, and on the day of the match, every corner of Bilbao and San Sebastián breathes one of the healthiest rivalries in Spanish soccer, where family, neighbors, and friends enjoy the Basque derby party.
The first league match between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club was played on the opening day of the 1928-29 season, on February 10, 1929, with the points shared (1-1) and goals from Paco Bienzobas and Bergareche (respectively) on the stroke of half-time in Atocha. The return leg, at San Mamés, was played on April 28, with Bilbao coming back from 0-2 down in the early minutes to win 4-2.

San Sebastian goalkeeper Luis Miguel Arconada is the player who has played in the ELDERBI VASCO the most times. Thanks to his long career (1973-1989), he faced Athletic Club 33 times defending Real Sociedad's goal. Of those, 24 were in LALIGA.
