The First Duel in LALIGA EA SPORTS
The first time FC Barcelona and Real Madrid met in the LALIGA EA SPORTS ELCLÁSICO was on February 17, 1929. The match was played at Les Corts, on the second matchday of the first edition of the league tournament, and the Merengues won 1-2 with a brace from Morera. Parera cut the deficit for the Culé team. In the second leg, FC Barcelona won 0-1 at Chamartín (goal by Sastre) on the way to the title.
Prior to this first LALIGA duel, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona met in seven Copa del Rey matches. The first of these came on May 13, 1902, in the semifinals of the Coronation Cup, a tournament not recognized by the RFEF. The Culés won 3-1. On March 26, 1916, the second duel arrived, in the Copa del Rey semifinals. The Culés won (2-1) and the Blancos won the second leg (4-1), meaning a tiebreaker (6-6 after extra time) and a fourth match were necessary to define the winner of the tie, which was Real Madrid (4-2, also in extra time).
Overall Statistics for Real Madrid against FC Barcelona
Since that first meeting in 1902, and counting the Coronation Cup duel, a total of 261 matches have been held between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, 190 of them in LALIGA. The balance so far is 105 Blanco victories, 104 Azulgrana victories, and 52 draws, with 432 goals scored by the Catalans and 443 by the Madridistas.
If we speak only of LALIGA EA SPORTS, 190 matches have been held, in which the statistics for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are closely matched: with 79 victories for Real Madrid and 76 for FC Barcelona, plus 35 draws. In terms of goals, there is a slight Azulgrana advantage: 307 to 309.
The Main Protagonists of ELCLÁSICO
In those 261 already historic duels, several player names stand out in the ELCLÁSICO statistics. The Culé Sergio Busquets (2008–2023) is the player with the most appearances, with 48 matches, 29 of them in LALIGA EA SPORTS. He is followed by Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos (2005–2021) and Leo Messi (2004–2021), both with 45.
If the data is limited to LALIGA, three Madridistas lead the table: Sergio Ramos himself, Paco Gento (1953–1971), and Raúl González (1994–2010), all with 31 editions of ELCLÁSICO. The Azulgranas Busquets, Xavi Hernández (1998–2015), and Leo Messi fell two league matches short. The Madridista Manolo Sanchís (1983–2001) is also in this group.
Among active players, Luka Modrić, with 25 league duels and 38 overall, is the most veteran in ELCLÁSICO.
All-Time Top Goalscorers in ELCLÁSICO
Regarding the all-time top goalscorers in LALIGA EA SPORTS, Leo Messi is the historical top scorer of ELCLÁSICO with 18 goals in 29 duels. He is followed by the also Argentine and Madridista legend Alfredo Di Stéfano (14 goals between 1953 and 1964), the Culé César Rodríguez (12 between 1942 and 1955), and Raúl González (11).
Accounting for overall data, Leo Messi is also in the lead. The Argentine scored 26 goals in 45 matches against Real Madrid. Following him, with 18 overall goals, are the Madridistas Alfredo Di Stéfano and Cristiano Ronaldo (2009–2018).
