Being a team's keeper is no easy task. Especially in the Liga BBVA, in which some of the most formidable strikers on the planet ply their trade. Just ask Thibaut Courtois, Gorka Iraizoz or Diego López, the top three goalkeepers in terms of the average number of goals conceded in this Liga BBVA season and the main reason behind their teams' success in this campaign.
Coutois: the Rojiblanco defence
The young Belgian has earned the admiration of his opponents with impossible saves and a rare confidence for a footballer of his age. Although he fell just short of playing every game (he took part in 37 out of 38), the Club Atlético de Madrid keeper only conceded 24 goals and, even more surprisingly, he has kept a clean sheet in 22 matches, giving his team the best defensive record in the table.
Iraizoz: reliability and experience at the service of Athletic
In his sixth season at Athletic Club the Navarrese keeper completed his best-ever campaign and next year he will play in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round. Thanks to his hard work and effectiveness, the Bilbao outfit has become one of the most feared in the championship, and his reliability between the sticks has seen him concede less than a goal per game.
Diego López: sacrifice made success
Diego López has conceded 36 goals in 36 games this season. The Real Madrid CF goalkeeper has managed to record this enviable figure in one of Europe's most demanding leagues. He has pulled this off while dealing with being one of the most scrutinised goalkeepers in the world and while having to battle it out with Iker Casillas for his place in the team.
Navas and Asenjo: the other winners
Last, but definitely not least, are perhaps two of the most talked about goalkeepers over the last few months. Levante UD's shot stopper, Keylor Navas, and Liga BBVA veteran Sergio Asenjo, currently with Villarreal CF, have also pulled off plenty of unforgettable saves to the delight of their fans. The Costa Rican, who is considered a diamond in the rough by many, has conceded 39 goals in 36 matches, while the Yellows' keeper has picked the ball out of the back of his net 41 times in 35 games.
