The relegation scrap doesn’t fail to entertain

Wins for Málaga and Elche against direct rivals in the relegation battle move both sides away from the drop zone and set up an exciting end to the season.

While Saturday’s action was full of excitement and goals in the upper end of the table, Sunday’s Liga BBVA matchday 32 encounters involved the teams near the bottom of the Spanish topflight. Such as it is, with Málaga, Elche and xx all winning, Real Betis, Almería and Getafe will now have to fight for their lives over the next few weeks to avoid relegation.

Bernd Schuster’s men got the ball rolling with an afternoon kick off in front of their fans against Granada, who now need to pick up points quickly if they are to avoid any complications during the final stretch of the season. Two goals from Ignacio Camacho, who has racked up five this season, another from Amrabat, from the penalty spot, and a Juanmi Jiménez strike were enough to earn Málaga all three points.

Following that, Elche sent their fans into a frenzy with a winner against Getafe in extra time. Richmond Boakye, who came on as a sub, got the goal that has given Fran Escribá’s side some valuable breathing room, with the Alicante outfit now looking relatively safe. The same cannot be said about the Madrid club, who failed to pick up some much-needed momentum and now sink further down the table.

It was also a great day for Sevilla, who beat Espanyol 4-1 to move within three points of a UEFA Champions League spot. To close out Sunday’s action, it finished all square between Valladolid and Valencia in the José Zorrilla, a result with very different implications for both sides. Valladolid greeted the point with a smile, while the draw sees Valencia drop down to eighth in the table.
