Celta will look for a second-leg comeback

A Marcus Rashford free kick midway through the second half handed Manchester United a first-leg win at Balaidos, leaving Celta with it all to do next week at Old Trafford.

RC Celta will head to Old Trafford next week needing a second-leg comeback if they are to reach the first European final in the club’s history. A solitary goal from Marcus Rashford midway through the second half was enough to secure a 1-0 first-leg win for Manchester United at Balaidos.

The game began evenly as both sides exchanged blows early on but it was the visitors who threatened most in the opening 45 minutes. Celta had Sergio Alvarez, who was in inspired form between the sticks, to thank as the goalkeeper denied both Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan before the break. Daniel Wass also came close for Eduardo Berizzo’s side, but his header flew wide after finding himself unmarked in the box.

The home side pushed for an opener in the second half and Pione Sisto forced a good save from Sergio Romero with a looping shot but Rashford’s strike on 67 minutes – a well-taken right-footed strike from the right-hand side of the box – took the wind out of their sails.

Having already overturned a first-leg home defeat in the competition against Shakhtar Donetsk, Celta will be confident in their ability to cause an upset next week in Manchester. If anyone can do it, they can.
