Fact of the week

Rojiblancos are masters in efficiency.

The last round of games saw Atletico Madrid claim top spot in the shot conversion charts after dethroning their city rivals Real Madrid. Since the start of the second half of the campaign, Diego Simeone’s troops have upped their game in many facets, particularly when it comes to shot conversion. Indeed, the Wanda Metropolitano-based side are top dogs for the number of goals scored per chances created. The Colchoneros clinched the final spot on the LaLiga Santander podium for the number of attempts and are the league runners-up for the number of attempts on target as a percentage of their total attempts. In sum, Atleti’s talented playmakers have been on top form to fire the Madrilenians into second spot in the league standings. Read on to find out about the crucial role played by Antoine Griezmann in the “Key player” section.

Remarkable Coach

Alguacil continues to deliver the goods.

Real Sociedad sit pretty in fourth place for the number of carries that result in an attempt on goal, as we can see from the graphic below. The Basques clearly play a high‑intensity brand of football, as reflected by the fact that they sit in fourth spot for the distance covered at over 21km/hr and lie in fifth when it comes to the distance registered at over 24km/hr. What’s more, the boys from San Sebastian are also fourth in the competition standings for the average distance clocked up per outing. In addition to these impressive fitness-related statistics, it’s also worth looking at how they fare in possession, where La Real rank as the fourth top-performing side in the Spanish top flight for overall possession and possession in the opposition’s half. One thing is for sure and that’s that Imanol Alguacil has instilled a strong all-round playing style in which the players take centre stage. In the “Remember the name” section we take a look at the instrumental role played by Alexander Sørloth in Real Sociedad’s impressive campaign.

Key Player

No let-up from golden boy Griezmann.

We have almost run out of adjectives to describe the performances delivered by the Atleti attacker this term. He lies fifth in the division’s scoring charts, third for both attempts on goal and the number of attempts on target. Meanwhile, he tops the LaLiga assist standings, and nobody has more key passes to their name than the classy Frenchman. As reflected in the following graphic, his assists come in all shapes and sizes. He has managed to strike the balance between scoring and creating and has excelled in both departments to establish himself as the most important cog in Atletico’s system, while also being one of the most in-form players in LaLiga Santander.

The Match up

Atleti meet La Real in clash of stats kings.

Matchday 37 serves up a meeting between two sides with plenty of spirit and their own deep-rooted playing styles. They have both shown themselves to be efficient sides, but there’s still more to come from them and they’ll be raring to secure the spoils in this encounter. The following video highlights how Simeone’s men move the ball around at great pace. Indeed, the capital club record the second-most passes per minute of possession in LaLiga Santander. The graphic below compares the two playing styles in a radar chart. If we analyse their physical statistics with their performance in the final third, we see how the Rojiblancos excel in attacking build-up, attempts on goal and shot conversion. Meanwhile, the Txuri-urdin have the upper hand in the possession stakes and distance covered, as well as high-speed sprints.

Remember his name

Sørloth offers perfect blend of power & accuracy.

The prolific Real Sociedad frontman tops his team’s scoring charts, while he lands second place for the number of attempts on goal and dribbles, while almost 20% of his attempts find the back of the net. That just gives us a bit of a taste of exactly what the Norwegian ace is capable of. However, that’s not the extent of his talents, as he also shines in the physical stakes: he racks up more actions at over 21km/hr when in possession than any of his team-mates. The graphic below shows his high-impact carries in the game against FC Barcelona.

Metric of the week

High-impact carries or carries that result in an attempt on goal.

This criteria can be referred to in both of the above‑mentioned ways, both of which refer to the same thing, i.e. the carry results in an attempt on goal. Given that they feature a range of characteristics, we can analyse carries from a number of angles. For example, they vary in their duration and occur in different areas of the pitch, etc. The carries that we spotlight in this instance are those that result in an attempt on goal. As we can see in the following video, Villarreal CF lie in second spot in the standings for the number of carries that result in an attempt on goal per game.
