Fact of the week

Making the most of their minutes

As we can see in this week’s video, Sevilla string together lots of passes in their possessions. They
boast the fourth highest figure in LaLiga for passes per minute. Real Betis are level with Mendilibar’s
team on this metric, with both producing 15.3 passes per minute. With a view to the Seville Derby,
there are reasons to expect a hard-fought tussle, with this assertion backed by several metrics. Let us
not forget that the important thing about passes is not their quantity, but how and where they are
made. Which is why it is worth noting that Sevilla are also among the top four on passes in the final
third and on the success rate of passes in this area.

Remarkable Coach

Crosses are an area Sevilla have improved on

Sevilla have significantly upped their game in a number of respects since changing managers, but if we
had to pick out the most important one it would have to be their crossing. They are currently third in
the competition in terms of the number of crosses they put into the box, with 22 per match. Before
the arrival of Mendilibar they were fifth. Their effectiveness has barely shifted. It is worth noting that
that the new coach has instituted a lot of changes, with the team playing more direct football and
performing better in both penalty areas. In the graphic we can see which of these crosses end in shots.
Without a doubt, this is a key approach to creating goalscoring chances.

Key Player

'The Panda' remains a key player

He creates chances and scores from them. His work with the ball is vital for Betis, but he also does
plenty off the ball. He creates space and his runs cause problems for opposing defences in every game.
Most importantly, Borja Iglesias is one of the top five goalscorers in the competition, with a haul of 13.
In the video you can watch one of his latest goals, and the graphic shows where he takes his shots that end up in the back of the net.

The Match up

Beyond Stats takes a look at the Seville Derby

Both teams doled out drubbings in their previous matches. Real Betis are currently sixth in the table,
with Sevilla tenth after a good run of late. Notably, they are two of the top five teams when it comes
to passes per minute. As we saw in previous sections, Sevilla have become more direct and are
currently in the top four for forward passes with 323.3 per game. They are also among the top four for
passes in the final third, with an average of 100, and in the top two for successful ones, with 82%.
Many of these forward moves originate in their own half, helping them to get the ball out. By way of
example, here we can see those completed against Real Valladolid in their last outing.

Remember his name

A tribute through data

Joaquin is one of the stars of his club, Real Betis. His track record speaks for itself and today at Beyond
Stats we would like to tip our hat to him as well. Although he has set hundreds of record stats over the
course of his career, we can highlight one which he attained while playing this season, although his
time has been limited. He is the top assist-provider for Los Verdiblancos, with almost 0.4 assists per 90
minutes played. In other words, he is heading into retirement while still at the top of his game. Also, in
the graphic you can see all of his key passes.

Metric of the week

Convex Hull in possession

We define the Convex Hull as the area occupied by a team on the pitch in different situations and
phases. We measure it in square metres and in this instance we are focusing on the Convex Hull in
possession.
This is the number of square metres occupied by a team when they have the ball in the attacking
phase. Larger areas can be indicative of a broader range of spaces and options for building the play
and a team’s penetration. Likewise, fewer square metres covered in the defensive phase can make
things harder for the opponent. In this regard, Rayo Vallecano stand out as the team in the
competition covering the second largest area when they have the ball, with an average of 1075 square
metres.
