A beyond-the-stats look at Pedri

In carrying out any sort of analysis about Pedri, it’s essential that we consider the context in which the starlet has burst onto the scene as one of the most promising prodigies in the world game. Not only has he emerged at a crucial time, exactly when his club needed him most, but he is flying the flag for the very brand of football that defines his club and is doing so under the tutelage of Barça icon Xavi.

The video features footage of one of his trademark carries, which see him travel an average of 16m before getting a shot off. He also ranks amongst the top flight’s leading five players for the number of passes in the attacking third, with 21 per outing. If we look more closely at the nature of these passes and focus on his long passes, which have earned him such rave reviews, we note that he is the league’s bridesmaid in terms of his success rate on long passes (86.7%).

Pedri’s elegant passing game is complemented with a high-octane approach that has landed him a top-five berth in terms of actions completed at over 21km/hr, as the fledgling talent posts over 44 every time he crosses that white line.

The leader of leaders, the player of the season: KARIM BENZEMA

The key to success isn’t just about delivering, it’s about delivering when it matters most and single-handedly hauling your team out of a tight spot. As illustrated in this video, Karim Benzema is one of the LaLiga Santander’s top performers when it comes to carries leading to shots, a metric in which Real Madrid are the division’s top dogs.

If we turn our attention to the one thing that wins football matches, i.e. goals, the French hitman is the undisputed champion. He’s the league’s leading marksman with 27 goals to his name; registers the most attempts per match, with 4.4; and posts the most shots on target, with 2.1; and also tops the charts for the number of passes in the final third (24.8).

In addition to these outstanding statistics in the attacking phase, we also note that the French front runner features near the top of his team’s ranking for the pressure he is under when playing a pass.

Lethal Lewandowski’s seamless adaptation

Despite having only checked into LaLiga Santander a matter of weeks ago, the Pole already leads the way in a number of the league’s rankings. Before discussing what he contributes in the final third, it is worth highlighting that he occupies top spot for the least distance to the nearest opponent when receiving the ball, i.e. he is regularly subject to intense pressure from opposition defenders.

In terms of his participation in creating play and goals, he is one of top three players in LaLiga Santander for the number of high-impact attacking actions, chalking up over five per game. He sits in second place in the league standings for the number of attempts on goal (4.4 per outing) and is also the runner-up for the number of attempts on target (almost three per match).

Difference-maker Lino shines brightly

Not only did Samuel Lino weigh in with a goal in Valencia’s meeting with Getafe CF, his on-field positioning was spot on and he showed great determination, both on a team level and individually. If we take a look across the Spanish top tier, no other player has registered more high-impact carries than the Brazilian ace so far this term (six). The talented Valencia trickster also features amongst the top 10 players in the league in terms of successful dribbles per game (almost two). Both Lino’s carries and dribbles play contribute to the team’s progressive play.

As if that wasn’t enough, he generates an average of one attempt on goal per game and boasts a shot conversion rate of 10%.

Fede Valverde earns Bernabeu ovations

When Fede Valverde struts his stuff on the Santiago Bernabeu pitch, the home fans revel in his talents and are justifiably keen to express their appreciation.

His devastating carries, which more often than not result in fine goals, place him amongst the top six players in the division in this department. He is the division’s sixth-best performer for the number of carries that break the opposition’s midfield line. However, not only does the Uruguayan schemer create goalscoring chances, he also possesses a veritable goal threat and features amongst the competition’s top 15 players when it comes to attempts on target. In addition, he bags a spot amongst the division’s top 10 aces for the number of high-impact attacking actions and passes completed in the final third.

In short, Valverde is one of those players who generates play, both with and without the ball, and also records an impressive number of shots on goal.
