Fact of the week

Cadiz continue to adapt to Gonzalez blueprint

As we can see in this video, Cadiz lie top of the league standings for the number of opponents beaten per pass. Last time out, the Andalusian outfit’s passes beat an average of 3.47 players, which compares favourably to the league average of 3.04. These decisive through-balls represent a departure from the very direct style that was a hallmark of their system prior to Sergio Gonzalez’s appointment. The Costa de la Luz-based side now find themselves halfway up the standings when it comes to build-up play, i.e. the number of passes per possession, whilst they stood bottom of the pile in this particular department under Alvaro Cervera’s stewardship.

As well as moving away from a direct style of play, Gonzalez’s Cadiz chalk up more passes per game, enjoy more possession in the opposition’s half, play more passes in the final third and record more attempts than under the team’s previous coach.

Remarkable Coach

Top tactician Emery boasts real pedigree

There are a whole host of reasons why Unai Emery could currently be considered as one of the leading coaches in the world game. We’re going to focus on the statistics as we explore Villarreal’s playing style. Emery’s charges lie fourth in the LaLiga Santander standings for the number of dangerous possessions per game, with an average of 4.6, whilst the Castellon-based side claim the final place on the LaLiga Santander podium for carries leading to shots, racking up over three per outing.

The Yellow Submarine’s clinical nature and accuracy in front of goal is also worth highlighting. Emery’s recruits lie fourth in the standings for the number of shots required to score. They find the net once every 7.8 attempts, a return that showcases their clinical streak. Meanwhile, in terms of their positioning, the boys from the Estadio de la Ceramica lie second in the ranking for width in possession or, in other words, they boast the second-highest convex hull in the competition.

Key Player

Suarez is key cog in Granada’s system

Luis Suarez is a highly influential member of the Granada team and not just on account of his goalscoring exploits. As we can see in this clip, the Colombian sharpshooter features amongst the top 10 players in the league for the number of actions completed at over 28km/hr, whilst he sits in fourth spot for the peak speed recorded (35.5km/hr).

The Match up

Atletico Madrid & Sevilla set for high-stakes showdown

Diego Simeone’s men and Julen Lopetegui’s lot have been within touching distance of each other virtually throughout the whole season and one look at the statistics reveals just how evenly matched the two sides are.

However, as this footage illustrates, the two teams display differences in terms of their on-field positioning. Whilst Sevilla have the division’s widest team spacing in possession, it is not a standout feature within the Atleti system. However, when out of possession, the Rojiblancos rank as one of the league’s most compact sides.

Many parallels can be drawn with regard to the teams’ technical and tactical aspects. If we look at how the two teams fare in front of goal, they both feature on the LaLiga Santander podium for the number of shots required to score (7.2 in Atletico’s case and 7.7 for Sevilla).

Remember his name

Playmaker Alejo is a top schemer

This season has seen the Valladolid-born wideman post statistics that have propelled him towards the very top of the various LaLiga Santander standings. As we can see in this clip, Alejo makes the most of his outstanding capability to excel in carries leading to shots.

However, the talented schemer shines in one particular type of carries: those that break the opposition’s defensive line. The 23 such carries he records per game have seen him bag himself a place amongst the top two players in the league in this facet. The Cadiz flanker is a difference-maker and that is highlighted by the fact that only three other players have amassed more crosses than the eight he records per game.

Alejo’s game is also all about intensity and he claims the final place on the LaLiga Santander podium for the most distance completed at over 21km/hr, chalking up over 1,102m at this speed.

Metric of the week

Convex hull in possession: with on the ball

The convex hull represents the m2 that a team occupies on the pitch during the various phases of play. In this instance, we’re analysing this criteria in the attacking phase, i.e. when the team is in possession.

Teams that have good width when in possession create more space and passing options, all of which favours a side’s build-up play. As this video illustrates, Sevilla have established themselves as the league’s top dogs for the highest convex hull in possession, with the Nervion-based side covering an average area of 1,130m2.
