LaLiga Beyond Stats

If you want to go deeper into the  advanced statistics behind LaLiga Santander, this is the space for you!

Fact of the week

Possessions worth their weight in LaLiga gold

Real Madrid’s possessions are complete, diverse and highly effective. This is nothing new and is an aspect that we’ve highlighted throughout the season and one that came to prominence in the latest round of games.

In the Merengues’ last outing, against Espanyol, 4.4 players were involved in each of the hosts’ possessions. This was the highest figure across the league on a matchday that saw the Madridistas claim LaLiga Santander glory. If we look back over the whole campaign, Carlo Ancelotti’s troops have posted an average of 3.70 players per possession, a return which also puts the capital club top of the pile.

This weekly clip illustrates how Real Madrid notched up this impressive figure in the latest matchday, whilst they have also posted the division’s highest score across the whole season.

Remarkable Coach

Ancelotti: Coach of Coaches

There are an endless number of superlatives that we could associate with Carlo Ancelotti, a coach who is amongst the most charismatic in European football, and the same applies to the statistics recorded by his Real Madrid this term. We want to centre our attention on the team’s dangerous possessions, with the boys from the Santiago Bernabeu amassing an average of 6.7 dangerous possessions, i.e. possessions that result in clear goalscoring opportunities, every time they cross that white line.

This figure reflects the fine work put in by the players and the squad’s attacking prowess, but we mustn’t forget that this criteria is complemented by a whole host of other aspects of build-up play, including attacking build-up, the involvement of a high number of players in possessions and carries that beat opposition players in different areas of the pitch, all of which are criteria that bolster the threat posed by the team in the attacking phase.

Key Player

Benzema establishes himself amongst world’s leading goal-getters

Any mention of Karim Benzema’s name automatically conjures up thoughts of a goalscoring threat, deadly efficiency in front of goal, smart movement and immense quality. He has displayed all of these qualities, not only with his impressive statistics, but his status as a leader within the squad. With regard to technical and tactic aspects, it’s worth pointing out that the Frenchman is usually under pressure when he receives the ball, as illustrated in this video. Indeed, the average distance to the nearest opponent when the hitman gains possession is just 4m.

Despite receiving such close attention, he’s the division’s leading marksman, notching up almost a goal a game, with a return of 0.95 goals per outing. He also sits unsurprisingly in second spot in the league standings for players to play the most passes in the attacking third, and occupies the same position in the LaLiga Santander standings for high-impact attacking actions.

The Match up

Madrid derby serves up stunning stats

This fixture always generates high expectations and the statistics demonstrate exactly why that’s the case. This grudge match represents a meeting between the league’s top two teams for shot conversion, as Atletico Madrid lead their city foes, with both teams on 9%. In the final third, we’re well aware that it’ll be an exciting contest, but we mustn’t forget about the build-up involved in the high number of dangerous possessions enjoyed by both sides. Indeed, the capital enemies feature among the league’s top five teams for the number of players involved per possession.

In addition to the elements of possessions that we’ve analysed above, they can also be examined in terms of the distances gained per possession. Real Madrid’s performance in this area is worthy of note, with the league champions ranking in third spot for the average distance gained in each attacking transition (35.5m

Remember his name

Valverde oozes quality, decisiveness & charisma

Fede Valverde is a key cog in Real Madrid’s system and he has showcased flashes of his quality and dogged determination all season. Whilst it’s not easy to single out one Real Madrid player in this section, we’ve gone for Valverde on the strength of his status as one of the top four players in the league in terms of the number of carries that break the opposition’s midfield line, a crucial element in a team’s attacking play. Meanwhile, the highest peak speed he has recorded this term places him amongst the top 10 LaLiga Santander players in these standings.

He is the runner-up in the Real Madrid squad for actions completed at over 28km/hr and combines that score by completing an impressive 2.5 recoveries in the opposition’s half per game, a return that places him amongst the top 15 players in the top flight.

Metric of the week

Carries leading to shots

Carries represent a very useful tool when it comes to a team’s attacking play. They vary greatly in their nature and can be analysed in terms of what they generate.

Some carries lead to shots and Real Madrid are the league’s top dogs in this particular department. The Chamartin-based outfit chalk up an average of 3.9 such carries per outing. One of the team’s leading lights in this respect is Vinicius, who is the division’s top performer for carries leading to shots.
