LaLiga Beyond Stats

If you want to go deeper into the  advanced statistics behind LaLiga Santander, this is the space for you!

Fact of the week

Emery’s boys excel when it comes to width in possession

Villarreal managed to pick up a point in their latest LaLiga Santander outing, a home meeting with Athletic Club. Despite not currently enjoying their best run of form, we’re still keen to focus on the technical and tactical aspects of the Yellow Submarine’s game that have caught our eye and offer us a better insight into the Castellon outfit’s playing style.

During their last game, Unai Emery’s charges posted the widest team spacing in possession across all of the league. This criteria helps the team to create space and offers a greater number of passing options. If we take a look at this criteria across the whole campaign, we discover that Villarreal lie second in these rankings, behind Sevilla. Meanwhile, it’s also worth noting that with a return of 58%, only three teams boast higher percentage statistics than the boys from the Estadio de la Ceramica.

If we dive deeper into the team’s possession and consider other aspects, we find that Villarreal sit in fourth position in terms of the number of passes per possession in their attacking build-up play.

Remarkable Coach

Ancelotti’s men are regular fixture amongst leading lights

Real Madrid perform well in a whole host of criteria and the capital club are one of the most complete sides in the division.

As illustrated in this video, no other team registers more carries that lead to shots than the Blancos, who chalk up almost four per game, with Vinícius one of the main contributors in this department.

The Chamartin-based outfit put together some intricate passing moves and lie top of the pile for the number of players involved per possession and the amount of passes per possession. These statistics combine to make Real Madrid the side to record the most attempts in the top flight and they also excel in the intensity stakes, where they can lay claim to being league champions for the number of sprints completed at over 28km/hr. As if that wasn’t enough, with regard to team spacing, the Merengues claim second spot in terms of team depth (an average of 37.1m).

Key Player

Exciting hitman Iglesias ranks impressively

As we can see in this video, Real Betis sharpshooter Borja Iglesias lies top of his team’s charts for the close attention he attracts from opposition defenders when receiving the ball (an average of 2.6 metres). Indeed, shielding the ball with players at close quarters is a hallmark of the frontman’s game, which has many facets to it.

If we focus on what all strikers live and breathe for, Iglesias features amongst the league’s top three players for goals per game, with a ratio of 0.65. That comes as little surprise when we note that he lies amongst the top 10 players in the division for shots on target, posting almost 1.5 per outing.

These statistics have seen the Panda bag himself a place amongst the top 15 players in the shot conversion stakes, with an impressive 25.7%. In short, this season has seen the target man combine quantity and quality to offer the Betis faithful a level of efficiency in front of goal that has brought no shortage of excitement and good results.

The Match up

Sánchez-Pizjuán set for blockbuster bout as Sevilla host Real Madrid

This contest is one of those games that sends expectation levels amongst supporters through the roof. It promises to be quite some showdown, not only because it pits third against first, but because of the teams’ amazing statistics.

The Matchday 32 opponents occupy two of the three spots on the LaLiga Santander podium for the number of players involved per possession, with the Andalusians posting 3.3 to the Madrilenians 3.7. In addition to these intricate possessions, both teams display good width and feature amongst the top three in the league’s overall width charts.

We round our analysis off with one of the statistics in which Julen Lopetegui’s charges excel. Sevilla boast the league’s widest team spacing in possession, with their possessions involving many players who offer the Andalusian outfit abundant width.

Remember his name

Galan is top-flight superstar

Celta Vigo’s Javi Galan is one of those players who quietly go about their business and yet manage to establish themselves amongst the front runners in some key rankings. The Galicians are delighted at the performance levels of a player who features amongst the LaLiga Santander top five for the number of dribbles that break the opposition’s midfield line. Dribbles are one of the gifted flanker’s go-to moves as he carries the ball and he has bagged himself a spot amongst the division’s top seven players for the number of successful dribbles per game.

The former SD Huesca winger’s intensity and physical strength have also earned him a place amongst the top 15 players in the league for actions completed at over 24km/hr (over eight per game). Meanwhile, we shouldn’t overlook the defensive side of his game, where we note that he is amongst the league’s top 15 performers for the number of interceptions made.

Metric of the week

La Real rule supreme on dangerous recoveries

Recoveries during the defensive transition can be categorised in many ways, including their characteristics or impact on the game.

In this instance, our focus is on dangerous recoveries, which arise when the team that regains possession has more or the same number of players ahead of the ball than the opposition. It is understood that such recoveries often result in the team that wins the ball back being in a favourable position in the subsequent attacking transition as they enjoy a numerical advantage.
