Nicknamed El Jefecito (The Little Boss’), Mascherano’s on-the-pitch leadership qualities shone from the day he joined FC Barcelona at the start of the 2010/11 season. The Argentine played for the Catalan giants over eight LaLiga Santander seasons, during which time he managed to win five league titles, five Copa del Reys, four Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Champions League, two European Super Cups and three Club World Cups. An admirable trophy haul for the versatile Argentine, who was just as comfortable playing as centre back as he was as holding midfielder and who, regardless of his position, was always a fundamental cog in the team. Javier Mascherano played a total of 577 matches during his career as a professional footballer, with 334 of those appearances coming as an FC Barcelona player.
