Even though LaLiga Santander has now entered its mid-season break for the World Cup, LaLiga clubs and players won’t be stopping their activities. LaLiga will remain visible across the sporting calendar through various activities: LaLiga SmartBank will continue to be played as normal, while activations around the world will also be organised by LaLiga and its clubs, as well as new forms of fan engagement to amplify the World Cup experience.

Clubs with international appeal

Even though there won’t be LaLiga Santander matchdays during the World Cup, several clubs will take advantage of this break to keep up their form while at the same time increasing their business development opportunities as part of the Boost LaLiga project.

Real Betis, for example, are embarking on a tour of South America which will feature fixtures against River Plate and Colo-Colo (two matches) in Argentina and Chile respectively, a tour that LaLiga has organised together with the promoter ProEnter. It will take place between 11th-19th November and beyond the matches will also involve various activations such as a meet and greet, collaborations with influencers, excursions and other events in Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, and Concepción.

Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal CF, meanwhile, will travel to Turkey where they will play against Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. The side from the Spanish capital will be in Istanbul from 28th November to 4th December, while El Submarino Amarillo will travel to the city from 1st December to 7th December. LaLiga has organised the tour in partnership with the Turkish Süper Lig with the aim of amplifying brand awareness and audiences for the league and its clubs in the country.

OTTs: LaLigaSportsTV and LaLiga Pass

These matches, as well as other friendlies played by LaLiga sides during this time, will be broadcast for Spanish audiences on LaLigaSportsTV, LaLiga's own OTT, as well as through LaLiga Pass in the countries in which it operates (Indonesia and Thailand). On both platforms, matches will be broadcast free for registered users. Here is the schedule:

Real Betis:

  • 13th November, vs River Plate. At 21:00h (CET).
  • 16th November, vs Colo-Colo. At 00:00 (CET).
  • 19th November, vs Colo-Colo. At 20:30 (CET).

LaLiga as an amplifier of the World Cup experience

LaLiga is a key player in the football world and aims to be an amplifier of the World Cup experience for its millions of fans all over the globe.

To this end, and under the concept of “LaLiga WorldCast,” LaLiga will undertake several projects, including a daily live show which will be broadcast on its YouTube channel and on LaLigaSportsTV all throughout the World Cup. It will feature well-known faces from the football world and cover a wide range of issues to give visibility to its clubs, competitions, projects and sponsors.

Regional derbies in LaLiga SmartBank

Professional football will continue to be played in Spain during the World Cup. LaLiga SmartBank, Spain’s second tier, will continue to run as normal and offer fans great matches throughout November and December.

Several regional derbies that embody the passion and history of Spanish football are on the menu. Basque rivals SD Eibar and Deportivo Alavés face off on 20th November, with the historic Canary Islands derby between UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife scheduled for six days later on 26th November. Andalusian heavyweights Málaga CF and Granada CF play each other on 8th December; the Aragonese derby between Real Zaragoza and SD Huesca will be played on the 10th December, while Real Oviedo and Real Sporting are set to face off in the Asturian Derby on 17th December.

LaLiga SmartBank is available on LaLiga broadcasters around the world and will also be available through LaLigaSportsTV internationally, and through LaLiga Pass in Indonesia and Thailand.

An assembly and immersion in MENA

The World Cup break will give LaLiga clubs the opportunity to immerse themselves in other markets. They will travel to Dubai, for example, where a General Assembly is scheduled to be held. At this assembly, the clubs will learn more about the specificities of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, experiencing an immersion that seeks to facilitate the internationalisation of the clubs in these countries. Developing a first-hand understanding of the entertainment consumer habits of the region’s residents and learning about the industry and the kinds of companies that operate in the territory will be key for LaLiga clubs to better direct their efforts when it comes to expanding in the region.

Moreover, this immersion experience will also offer networking sessions held with other clubs, companies, and public institutions in the territory, all of which will facilitate new partnership, investment, and projection opportunities in the MENA region.
