Fact of the week

Rodrygo back in the groove & smashing the stats

In Real Madrid’s latest outing, the Brazilian attacker staked his claim with his goalscoring exploits, but there is so much more to the menacing forward’s game than goals. Indeed, he ranks seventh in the league standings for high-impact attacking actions, averaging over three per game. These actions are reflected in the graphic below.

Central to these high-impact actions are his carries that lead to attempts on goal, an area in which he excels in the LALIGA EA Sports ranking as the second-highest performing player. He has chalked up almost 20 carries this term that have resulted in a goal or a goalscoring opportunity. If we look at how he performs at team level, none of his Real Madrid teammates record more attempts on goal per game than the fleet-footed forward (four). This set of metrics reflect why he is a such a standout player.

Remarkable Coach

Relentless Alguacil is reaping rewards

The success that Real Sociedad are enjoying under Imanol Alguacil is grounded on three main elements: success in duels, a bold approach in the opposition’s half and an impressive shot conversion rate.

Real Sociedad bag fifth spot in the league charts for the number of aerial duels won (17 per match). It’s particularly interesting to see in which areas of the pitch these occur, and we’ve compiled this information in the graphic below. The San Sebastian-based outfit also claim the final podium place for possession in the opposition’s half, with 32% of the team’s possession coming in opposition territory. In addition, the Basques are a top-three team when it comes to shot conversion, recording a score of 15%.

Key Player

Seasoned campaigner Morales continues to fire

If we look at the goal-per-game statistics, it emerges that Jose Luis Morales features amongst LALIGA’s top ten performers, averaging 0.64 goals per game. The experienced frontman finds the net with 25% of his attempts on goal, which sees him land the final place on the Villarreal CF podium in this area. He records more attempts on goal than any of his teammates (2.6) and is the runner-up in the Yellow Submarine ranks for the number of attempts on target. The graphic below displays all of Morales’s attempts on goal this season, which reflect a particular liking for long-range efforts.

The Match up

Fourth host third as Barcelona take on Atletico

Matchday 15 serves up a meeting between two effective sides with contrasting styles. The Catalan giants sit at the top of the league pile for the number of passes completed in the attacking third and in terms of attacking build-up. The boys from the Camp Nou are also well placed when it comes to the number of attempts on goal per game (over 15). The hosts have the upper hand over Atleti in these areas, but the Rojiblancos come out on top in terms of goals for, aerial duels won and success in defensive aerial duels. Ahead of this mouth-watering clash, we welcome you to take a look at the radar charts that compare the two LALIGA heavyweight

Remember his name

Greenwood screamer reveals series of other top stats

Mason Greenwood lies top of the Getafe CF charts for attempts on goal (2.6 per match). However, quantity isn’t everything, and he also shines brightly in the Azulones ranking in terms of attempts on target, where he clinches second spot, with one such attempt per game. However, the statistic that really makes us sit up and take note is that that he’s the third top-performing player in the Spanish top flight, behind Viktor Tsygankov and Rodrygo, in terms of high-impact carries, with a total of 12 so far this term. In short, there’s way more to this sharpshooter’s game than goals.

Metric of the week

Ball circulation rate: passes per minute

This metric allows us to measure a team’s possession, not only in terms of the number of passes, but the rate at which the ball is circulated. This metric involves calculating how many passes a team complete within 60 seconds. This criterion complements and gives context to other possession-related statistics, such as passes per possession and possession percentage in different areas of the pitch, etc. Atletico Madrid are the division’s top dogs in this particular department, clocking up an impressive 17 passes per minute.
