LALIGA expresses its respect for the recent ruling by the Provincial Court of Madrid in relation to the so-called Super League and reiterates that the decision does not approve or endorse any specific competition format, nor does it refer to the initial project announced in 2021, which has since been modified by its promoters.
The court's decision focuses exclusively on procedural aspects, establishing that authorization systems must be based on transparent, objective, and reviewable criteria, without making any statements regarding the substance or viability of potential alternative tournaments.
The league reiterates its firm commitment to:
• The integrity and stability of national competitions, a fundamental pillar of European football and its economic and social sustainability.
• Respect for the European Union’s competition rules, through clear, non-discriminatory procedures aligned with the general interest of the football ecosystem.
• Ongoing dialogue with institutions and clubs to ensure that any innovation or proposal does not harm the leagues, their fans, or the sport’s value chain.
“This ruling does not in any way represent an endorsement of the Super League or any other format. It merely reiterates that regulations must be applied with transparency and objectivity,” stated Javier Tebas, President of LALIGA. “We will continue to defend the European model based on sporting merit, solidarity, and the sustainability of national competitions. Any proposal that respects these principles will be considered; what we will not do is give blank checks to projects that put the balance of football at risk.”
